Christmas concert

I put together a band last minute I used people organising and confidence to ask people in my class I had never worked with on a song to do a song with me because I wanted to get guitarists I knew were more experienced to the genre .

Rehearsal :

Out first run through

Today we had our first run though I let the band listen to the song a few times whilst they did that I decided to print out the lyrics to improve my organisation a key skill for live performing as you need to hold responsibility  for your actions .

I listened to female covers of the song to give myself ideas for different vocal techniques I listened to a bunch of different cover that helped inspire mine such as

I wanted to work on my stage presence a key skill for live performance so i rewatched the Aerosmith live version a lot of times and used his charisma as inspiration the way he doesn't just sing the lyrics but interacts with them for example how he stares down the audience and on the lyric ' Words out on the street ' he walks along the stage wich i found very effective as it shows a confidence over the space.

i used this in y performance of the piece :

Out of alll the covers I watched the Kelly Clarkson one was the one that really helped inspire mine . s

D8.2&3 COURSEWORK

Over the course of the next few weeks I have set my focus on bettering my Premier Pro skills so later on in the year I can create a music video for an original I'm making . Learning these skills will allow me produce better quality and unique to me videos onto platforms such as YouTube and other social networks. My goal is to create a project of around 40 seconds long , containing clips of self-taken b roll and some original lyrics that will play across the clip like a poem . One of my inspirations for this is the film maker 'illneas' who creates poem film on YouTube :

Alongside this , i will also be developing other skills based around my solo performance such as :

  • Looking and practising vocal techniques and exercises and then evaluating . I have a musical theatre audition coming up and want to make sure my voice is musical theatre ready as it's a different style to what I usually sing I will have to learn different techniques. This will broaden my vocal abilities .
  •  Becoming more familiar with guitar and learning knew songs, stage presence and organisation .
  • Stage presence and confidence
  • Organisation
I will do this by watching Youtube videos and practise what I learn . I will write down what worked and didn't work for me ( evaluation)  and aim to learn from it. I will also be putting the skills into practise through actual practical gigs

PLAN

WEEK 1 : This week will be focussed on preparing for my refectory gig I will develop my organisation skills as a performer and also look at tips and techniques for stage presence and confidence k ey skills in solo performance.

I will start my premier Pro journey and look at how to import, preview and export clips and projects .

WEEK 2 :  My plan for this week will be to start taking b roll and watching videos on how to do this successfully .

I will also watch videos on lyric writing an techniques so as I can start writing some lyrics for my adobe project.

WEEK 3:

The week will preparation for my next gig I will use this gig to develop from the one on week 1 and learn new songs to perform . After I will compare the two gig to see where I developed what worked well for me and skills I learned .

I will continue developing my premier pro skills at speed changing and audio.

WEEK 4 :

This week I will  learn  transition and color adjustment skills on premier pro . This will help my video flow more fluently . I will continue writing lyrics researching methods that helped real musicians write their lyrics .

WEEK 5 :

This week I have an audition coming up for a musical I will use this week to learn about the musical theatre vocal style  watching videos  on different exercises learning about Vocal stamina techniques.

I will also continue developing my premier pro skills looking at  time remapping , graphics , and color matching .

WEEK 6 :

This week is where with the skills I have gained over the last six weeks I will start creating my video project.

I will evaluate the solo performance techniques and tips I have put into practise over the last six weeks.

Week 1 :

(solo performance skills Monday - Friday )

This week I will be developing my solo performance skills as I have a gig in the refectory coming up.

At the start of this week I knew I had to prepare myself for my upcoming gig . This would be a good chance to develop my solo performance skills playing my guitar .

I watched a video on stage performing :

Key tips from this video for me :
  • eye contact , finding a point at the back of the room, I practised this across the week trying to keep eye contact with whoever I'm talking to for 5 seconds.
  • not talking as much ( typically I ramble when I'm nervous ) if I'm going to talk , talk after the first song cause ,typically,  people want to hear you play first . I liked this piece of advice cause I believe it  makes the performer seem more relaxed
  • be prepared backup song ,  and printing lyric sheets

Organisation skills  :
  •  I printed out the lyrics of each of my songs in preparation for the gig
  • Made a checklist for equipment I needed
  • kept a separate bag for all my gig equipment

Memorising Lines

I researched lots of different techniques for memorising lines the main things that came up were things like flashcards and self testing  however I found the best way for me was to actually just sing the song on karaoke multiple times until I could turn my back to the screen .

Day of the performance :

I decided to change up and use an electric instead of my acoustic thinking I had brought everything with me and practised to the very last minute .
What went well: I managed to keep my head up and keep my eyes focused instead of to the floor
My second and third song went well my lyrics were there for support but I never needed them .

What went wrong : Using the electric was a mistake in this case as my guitar input wasn't working so I had to use a college guitar wich was out of tune . Even though it was a rough start  I managed to push through the next song even though it didn't go exactly to plan , this developed my performing under pressure  skills and 'show must go on ' type persona which Is a critical trait to hone in this industry as its full of difficult situations like this which ,although not ideal, are a good learning hurdle for me to develop soft skills like resilience and calmness under pressure.

( PREMIER PRO Saturday - Sunday )
Im going to be introducing myself to premier pro looking at basic skills such as Importing , previewing and exporting clips and audio .

WEEK 2
This week I wanted to start taking b roll for my project , I started taking bits of b roll withought much knowledge on how to shoot It , taking random videos here and there. I decided to watch a video of how to shoot with an iPhone and with good techniques and got some better footage .

This is the video I watched :

Techniques:
  • Shoot B roll low instead of from eye height this creates more depth within the shot ; a more three dimensional image which is more interesting for the viewer. Also as its from a more unique angle makes it more intriguing.
  • Make sure to have precise camera movement , keep it at a constant speed so as not to make viewers dizzy and make video look rough .
  • You can do this by videoing quick one motion shots in a certain direction . I made the mistake of taking long 15 second clips of my surroundings  these were captured a lot and never really had a focus .

  • when filming don't try and get as much as you can in one shot , its better to have each clip focused on a specific thing so as not to overwhelm viewer , allowing an attention to detail . making the video look cleaner.I decided i wanted a focus for each clip i shot wich can be seen in the clip.
  • Capture action instead of still images . This is good advice for me as a beginner as Its difficult for beginners shoot shots whilst moving the camera in a controlled professional manner so sometimes the best way to get a moving video is by capturing something that's already moving so you can keep the camera still.

Overall i would say my b roll was successful i . The hardest part especially on a phone was moving the camera i found that  a good technique for me was to lean you body into the motion of camera if you were going forward for example scoop your whole body forward with the camera not just your hands.
I learned that simple 5 second shots were more effective then longer shots .

WEEK 3 :

This week I will be practise for my next gig further developing my solo performance skills by learning from my last gig .
After trying out the flashcard technique for learning lyrics I decided the best way for me was by singing the song on karaoke until I got it . Also last time I printed out the lyrics I decided to buy a book and write all my lyrics for my chosen song down inside their so as I don't loose sheets making me feel more organised . Physically writing down things  has always helped me remember things better .

I used acoustic for this gig so as I can compare the different guitar styles
Practise : I will be performing 3 songs
2 playing guitar and singing and the third is just me singing with Mollie on piano .
It ill be the first time playing bar chords in front of an audience wich although seems like a small achievement is a good one for me and shows a development towards my guitar skills if it goes well

To practise I have been performing in front of family members and to strengthen my fingers for the barre chords I have been using a technique where you hold one of the frets down for five seconds and repeat and then go down to the next fret almost like doing reps at a gym .

GIG

From my last performance I learned that over practising could actually make me feel more nervous than necessary so I practised until it cam fluently but an hour before the gig gave myself some breathing Time away from practise.
I was feeling rather nervous before the gig so used a square breathing technique that we've been learning in choir.
As well as this being a good technique to stretch vocal stamina it is also a good technique to relieve stress.

I decided to take on the advice of the previous video I watched on solo performance skills and not talk as much and just perform which I felt was good for me as I tend to nervous ramble ; I think it made my set look more professional . Mollie joined me for the end on the piano she was very nervous so I had to set aside my own fear and be the moral support this helped with my team work skills . I steadily helped her ease into the song as she was playing to quick so had to restart I did this in a relaxed manner and by the end the performance turned out really well .
I even got feedback on my performance from a lady from the BBC she generously stated ' Your voice was beautiful and when the two of you were onstage the way you helped navigate the performance was done  really well '
This made me feel I had accomplish my goal in developing my solo performance skills by my soft skills on stage and also my karaoke practise of the songs .

PREMIER PRO skills for this week are on speed changing and audio :

Changing Speed :

Audio:

WEEK 4

This week I have continued my research on Premier Pro skills to help create my final project at the end. I looked at transitions , speed and colour adjustment. This will help my video flow more fluently AND look more professional  .

I continued taking some more b roll during the course of this week and now have enough succesfull shots to Create my project.

WEEK 5

I used week 5 to look at skills such as motion graphics , colour correction , time remapping , audio mix and a technique called ducking .

WEEK 6 :

Putting my video together

  •  I airdropped the videos to my Mac and imported them onto the timeline panel
  • Then I moved and trimmed them down getting rid of the fatty parts and keeping the best parts
  • My next step was to change the speed of the clips slowing them down from 100% - 75% this was so each clip could have a good amount of time on screen to give the reader time to read the lyrics which I will later add .
  • Next I wanted to time remap certain clips such as the one with the axe and the woodblock so as the axe came down in a slower motion
  • The next thing I realised was that a couple clips still  had their audio. I watched a video on how to  get rid of the audio and not the video and learned I had to unlink it from the video so I could delete it .
  •  This meant that I could add music so i added a piano music file. However i the  music was too loud so i had to adjust the volume .
  • I then added auto match which i learned levels out the volume of different clips

Before auto match:

After Auto match :

  • After this i added the graphics as a beginner i found this difficult and ran into a lot of challenges such as making sure the text came in at at the points i wanted them to come in . I had to ripple edit them to extend some clips so there was enough time to read the words and so the video didn't run into the other videos.
  •  I then added transitions

When i first added them i added a lot of different ones thinking it would give it variety however i found the  most effective way was by just keeping one type of transition throughout the project so as it wasn't as messy . I used cross fade the most.
I did a lot of my self reflection throughout the write up
but overall  i feel my project was successful  , i managed to shoot decent b roll and create a clip with original lyrics. I manged to get the words flow on the screen and edit the speed of my videos where i needed to. The skills i learned will help me progress with a basic knowledge for starting to create a music video these skills will also expand my marketing abilities .
I learned how to make an effective video with transitions and speed effects( slow motion ) this I found difficult at the start as it was a very precise process but once I got the hang of it and learned how to use the shortcut I found it easier .  I  learned how to add animation to the videos ( I added lyrics ) I remember the problem I had with this was making sure the lyrics were a color that would make it stand out from the background, after a few   and audio and level out the audio .
The last six weeks have helped develop my solo performance skills looking at my organisation ( lyric books , gig bag etc ) And also handling pressure when i had issues like my guitar output not working , for example , i still managed a performance . I faced a lot of constraints such as my guitar not working on the day of the gig and issues with
For the future i hope to keep developing my solo performance skills working on things like stage presence and eye contact and also creating original works .
